Educational Activities
At UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, we have had the privilege of hosting numerous students from various countries, engaging in a wide range of CAT-related projects. From Kazakhstan, we welcomed Akbota Aitkulova in 2018, Dr Dauren Zhumakhanov in 2020, followed by Dr Saltanat Abdraimova and Dr. Guzyal Shiderova in 2022. From Tajikistan, Dr Manizha Ganieva joined us in 2020.
Our collaborations have also extended in Georgia, where we have had the pleasure of working with Dr Mariam Kekenadze in 2021, as well as Dr Tamar and Dr Sophia Sopromadze in subsequent years. Recently from Armenia, we were joined by Dr. Mariam Isayan. Each of these students have contributed to the depth and breadth of our research endeavours.
On May 27, 2019 TSMU First University Clinic was visited by Professor Henry Holden, the Head of Queen Square Institute of Neurology (Great Britain) and Laboratory of Neurogenetics and his assistants V.Chelban and R.Kaiyrzhanov.
Prof. Holden held public lectures for TSMU students, residents and doctors. “Handbook of Neurogenetics in Clinical Practice”, “Huntington Disease”, “Next-generation DNA Sequencing to Analyze Genetic Variants in Neurological Diseases”.
The guests also attended examination process of patients having neurogenetic diseases.
Tbilisi State Medical University PhD student Mariam Kekenadze had a scientific visit at the University College of London, Institute of Neurology and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. The TSMU student conducted scientific research at the Institute of Neurology. She was supervised by Professor Henry Holden, Head of the Neurogenetics Laboratory at the University College of London.
The doctoral research is carried out within the framework of cooperation between the Tbilisi State Medical University and the University College of London. The project involves performing the laboratory part at the Institute of Neurology in London. TSMU Professor Maia Beridze and Professor Henry Holden, Head of the Neurogenetics Laboratory at the University College of London are the supervisors of the research.
Doctoral candidate Saltanat Abdraimova completed her traineeship at the Institute of Neurology at University College London (UCL) on 4 November. UCL is the UK's leading university in research capacity in neurology, psychiatry, and psychology, according to the UK Research Excellence Framework 2021. The Institute of Neurology has eight departments dedicated to clinical and genetic research covering all central nervous system diseases.
During the traineeship, Saltanat Abdraimova got acquainted with the equipment and principles of the work of the neurogenetic laboratory, together with Professor Henry Holden, participated in the examination of patients, attended lectures and seminars for doctors, and discussed interesting clinical cases. The doctoral student and Professor Holden also discussed the issues of the dissertation work and outlined further common goals and objectives in scientific activity.
Regional clinical hospital held the scientific and practical “Neurogenetics and parkinsonism” seminar with British neurogenetics scientists. Neurology and neurosurgery professor, head of neurogenetics laboratory at the Neurology Institute of University College London Henry Holden and his colleague, PhD student of the named Institute Rauan Kairzhanov visited Shymkent upon invitation by the management of Turkistan regional Healthcare department.
Henry Holden shared his experience with South Kazakhstan neurologists, examined patients with acute forms of neurogenetic diseases.
Department of neurology, psychiatry and psychology at SKMA lead by its head Zharkinabeva N.A. took an active in the seminar.
Professors, teachers and residents of the department selected the patients that were suffering from neurogenetic pathology of those diseases.
On November 9, 2022, the rector of the South Kazakhstan Medical Academy M.M. Rysbekov met with foreign guests participating in the international scientific and practical conference “Topical Issues of Clinical Neurology and Psychiatry”, O.V. Kamaeva. - Associate Professor of the Department of Nervous Diseases of St. Petersburg Medical University. Academician Pavlov, Holden Henry - BSc (Hons), PhD, MD, MRCP, Professor of Neurology and Neurogenetics, UCL Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London, Kayyrzhanov R.B. — BSc (Hons), MSc, MD, PhD fellow Department of Neuromuscular Disorders, Institute of Neurology, University College London, Queen Square (UK).
M.M. Rysbekov thanked the scientists for participating in the scientific forum of neurologists, which is supported by the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan, government health authorities, and the medical community. The organizer of such a large-scale event every year is the Department of Neurology, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation and Neurosurgery of the South Kazakhstan Medical Academy, which is headed by Professor, Chief Freelance Neurologist of the Health Administration of the Turkestan Region N.A. Zharkinbekova.
He also spoke about the history of the university, which has a 40-year history of development, and about the training of medical and pharmaceutical personnel. He briefly outlined the prospects for the development of the academy, taking into account the investment project approved by the ministry for the construction of a multidisciplinary university clinic, which was launched in October.
Foreign guests O.V.Kamaeva, Holden Henry, Kaiyrzhanov R.B. talked about the importance of international cooperation in the field of medicine, which allows you to exchange experiences, results of clinical studies, and share the current situation.
Together with foreign doctors, the following took part in the conversation: Head of the Department of Scientific and Clinical Work, Doctoral and Master's Studies A.A. Zhaksylyk, Dean of the Faculty of Continuing Professional Development K.Zh.Kenesova.
The international conference over two days - November 10-11, 2022 - is being held at Rixos Khadisha Shymkent. The conference program includes issues of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of diseases of the nervous system, both pediatric and adult neurology. Speakers from near and far abroad will present interesting clinical cases, and there will be an introduction to modern advances in the areas discussed and practical skills.
